TweetDeck sold to UberMedia, who now controls how one-quarter of the world accesses Twitter

TweetDeck is the undisputed king of all Twitter clients. Originally launching on the desktop in mid-2008, it became an instant hit with everyone from regular social media addicts to corporate social media managers. After versions for iOS, Android and now “ChromeDeck” came out, TweetDeck has consistently been the go-to client and their products are now responsible for over 20% of the world’s tweets.

TechCrunch is now reporting that UberMedia has purchased TweetDeck for somewhere in the range of $25-$30m dollars.

iPhone jailbreakers rejoice, new version of GreenPois0n released for OS X and Windows

I don’t usually dedicate much space here for jailbreaking news, but it’s a Saturday and news is slow. The Chronic dev team has released a new version of their GreenPois0n jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1. This is version RC6 for both Mac OS X and Windows.

No word yet on when the Linux version listed on their site will be released.

In addition to setting your iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad or later generation iPods free, this version will now also jailbreak the second generation Apple TV. This is an untethered jailbreak, meaning you can boot up your iOS device without being plugged into a computer.

‘MeeGo Home’ – Nokia employees stage walkout in protest of Microsoft quasi-takeover

Not everyone was happy with the news that Windows Phone 7 would soon become the platform of choice for Nokia. Among those upset were the thousands of Nokia employees who staged a walkout in protest of their new Redmond-based masters.

According to HS.fi, the employees didn’t actually quit, but took the rest of the day off, en mass.

“Quite a few people used the flexible working time,” said Kalle wedge , Nokia’s senior staff in the shop steward in Tampere.

But they might as well. Nokia is expected to begin slashing jobs for programmers who no longer will be needed to maintain the Symbian platform, or the reduced focus on their MeeGo code.

Only those who used their flex time to go out and find the nearest copy of Silverlight for Dummies may be spared, as Nokia will now refocus towards application programming and development for that platform.

Protip: Nokia employees who walked out today, should being updating their resumes.

Symbian is dead, long live Windows Phone. Nokia is now an major player in the Windows Phone ecosystem, and all Microsoft had to do was let of one their people become the CEO. Not a bad deal.

Two factor authentication now available for your Google accounts

Google has now set the bar a little higher for Internet account security. Now the super-paranoid (like yours truly) can further secure their Gmail through the use of Google’s new two factor authentication system.

While not as cool as as using YubiKey for LastPass you can now use your phone to generate a one time password to gain access to your Google account. As I’ve covered before, you shouldn’t be using the same password for multiple online accounts, but you really shouldn’t be using your main email password for anything else, as it is the go-to place for account recovery. But even if you are, this additional layer of security will make compromising your account nearly impossible. (more…)

Surprising, yet not… no line to get your Verizon iPhone at the Mall of America

The Apple store at the Mall of America was… uh, not very busy today. Surprising, since today was the first day you could get your Verizon iPhone without being an existing Verizon customer.

Verizon set a new record for first day sales of a new product in 2 hours last week, when they sold the device to existing customers. It seems that the predicted flood of AT&T customers isn’t happening quite yet.

Maybe AT&T in Minneapolis (and the rest of the United States) isn’t as bad as everyone in San Fransisco and New York seem to make it out to be? Kinda like I said last month?

No, that couldn’t be it.

Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 coming February 22nd

Microsoft has officially announced that Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 will be released to the general public on February 22, 2011.

Volume License customers, TechNet and MSDN subscribers will get access to the download on February 16. OEM and other Microsoft partners got access to the bits yesterday.

For server admins, one of the more interesting features of Service Pack 1 is Dynamic Memory. From the Windows Server Blog:

Our first new feature, Dynamic Memory, takes Windows Server’s Hyper-V feature to a whole new level. Dynamic Memory lets you increase virtual machine density with the resources you already have—without sacrificing performance or scalability. In our lab testing, with Windows 7 SP1 as the guest operating system in a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) scenario, we have seen a 40% increase in density from Windows Server 2008 R2 RTM to SP1. We achieved this increase simply by enabling Dynamic Memory.

For desktop users, RemoteFX will be a boost for users who frequently RDP into their clients, or are running desktops in virtual machines.

RemoteFX is an exciting technology that lets you virtualize the Graphical Processing Unit (GPU) on the server side and deliver next-generation rich media and 3D user experiences for VDI.

Internet Explorer 9 RC available for download

Microsoft has posted the bits for the Windows Internet Explorer 9 Release Candidate, and thanks to our pal Tom Warren at WinRumors, we have the web installer downloads for you.

We’re downloading and installing this now, to let you know what has changed from the last beta and from Internet Explorer 8. Just a note, there are links posted for Windows 7 and Windows Vista, but not XP. Why? Because there will be no Internet Explorer 9 for Windows XP. All good things must end.

One of these tablets is not like the other, one you can buy right now

Today was an interesting day in the tablet world. We learned that what was left of Palm has now officially been smashed into HP, and that HP is serious about really building on the momentum that Palm had started to build with webOS. HP announced a plethora of new things today (which you can read more about over at Engadget, who I stole/borrowed the wonderful chart above from) but the most interesting today was their new tablet, the HP TouchPad.

I have been getting a lot of crap from people for talking a lot about Apple on this site recently. If you’re bothered by this, feel free to stop reading now, or write your own articles. Fact of the matter is, they’re key to a lot of the technology I’m interested in right now and they execute it better than anyone else.

Official OneNote app comes to the iPhone

Microsoft has finally brought an official Office application (at least one of them) to the iPhone platform. The OneNote app allows users on an Apple mobile device to modify and create OneNote files from their iOS device and sync them through SkyDrive. Is this a sign of new applications to come out of Redmond to try and help combat users leaving Bill Gates’ cash cow called Office? If so, I believe it is a smart move. Choice and flexibility may help the fight against competitors from juggernauts Sun and Google. Currently Microsoft is giving the way the app but leaves the door open for a future profit stream by stating the application is “free for a limited time.”

Android users are currently left in the dark forced to use third party apps like MobileNoter to get their OneNote on.
